What is the one single most important key to success?

It’s not talent. Though that helps.

It’s not hard work. Though that is required.

It’s not luck. Luck is simply where preparation and hard work meets opportunity.

It’s not who you know, your education, your parents, where you were born, or any of a hundred other things that people blame for not being “a success”. Though those things can all help.

How many times have you not done something because you thought it would be too hard? I know I have done that too many times to count.

Like Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t — you’re right.”

The single most important thing is your mindset. The story you tell yourself.

I remember saying as a teenager, that I would never become an out of shape old man. And I didn’t for a while. But then slowly, the story I told myself changed.

I said I was too tired to get up and move. So I didn’t. And the more often I said that to myself, the more out of shape I got. I told myself that I was in pretty good shape for my age and compared to most people my age.

For twenty years, I told myself that story. I work hard, so I was too tired. Or that my knees hurt. Or that I would…
