Does being physically fit make you a better father and husband?

I’ve never read any studies about that, but it seems to me like it probably does.

When I was young, I remember saying that I would never get old, fat, and out of shape. But life seems to have a way of making us eat our words.

I spent many years focusing on two things. Business, and coaching my kids’ sports teams. I was good at both. And I also neglected my own fitness.

I remember teaching my son basketball and never letting him win. I thought that would make him earn the wins. Make him work harder and learn the value of a good work ethic. And it probably did that.

But as I neglected myself over those years, I got fatter and more out of shape.

Eventually, I quit playing him one on one. Not because I thought he could beat me, which he could at that point. but because i was too fat and tired to do it anymore. I even told myself to retire on top. Like the Kenny Roger’s song, know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ‘em.

But that was a lie.

The truth was, I was fat and out of shape.

The bad part about that is I was lying to myself and didn’t even realize it.
